An Austin public health official working to get Texas lawmakers access to the COVID-19 vaccine regardless of whether they are currently eligible made a request to a local hospital to administer the shots to members gathering in the capital city for the 2021 legislative session, the official said late Friday.
In an attempt to defuse what he considers to be a public health risk to the city, Dr. Mark Escott, the interim medical director for Austin Public Health, told The Texas Tribune that he asked Ascension Seton hospital system “if they would be willing to vaccinate lawmakers and key staff if they had availability.” ....

Central Texas schools want teacher vaccinations prioritized

Leaders of more than 15 Central Texas school districts and public charter schools on Thursday sent a letter to Dr. Mark Escott, interim Austin-Travis County health authority, asking him to prioritize teacher vaccinations and urge the state to include all school staff members in the next round of shots.
The signees, representing the Austin, Lake Travis, Pflugerville, Del Valle, Hays and Georgetown school districts, among others, educate more than 275,000 students in Central Texas.
The letter commends the work that Austin Public Health already has done and asks for local health officials to coordinate with providers to get vaccines to educators who are eligible for immunizations in Group 1B of the state’s vaccine rollout. The group comprises those over 65 and people with underlying health issues. ....

Travis County may reach ICU capacity Thursday amid COVID-19 surge

Dr. Mark Escott, interim Austin-Travis County health authority, warned Travis County commissioners during a weekly meeting Tuesday that hospitals were just 10 people away from reaching the 200 person limit for coronavirus patients in intensive care units.
Escott said area hospitals reported a record of 117 new coronavirus hospitalizations on Tuesday, for a total of 601 active hospitalizations.
Of those total hospitalizations, 190 patients were in the ICU and 104 were on ventilators, according to Escott.
This situation is far from over and more likely to get worse than better in the short term, Escott said.
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, the area s three health care networks  Ascension Seton, Baylor Scott & White Health and St. David’s HealthCare said 75% of the 2,473 staffed beds within their systems and 91% of their 483 ICU beds are occupied. ....
