The Leapfrog Group recently released its spring 2021 Hospital Safety Grades, assessing more than 2,700 U.S. hospitals on how well a facility prevents medical errors and other harm to patients. (Shutterstock)
AUSTIN, TX Several Austin area hospitals received top safety marks while others didn t quite measure up in The Leapfrog Group s annual spring safety grades released Thursday.
The nonprofit health care watchdog group grades hospitals twice a year, assigning letter grades from A to F based on each hospital s ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections.
More than 2,700 general, acute-care U.S. hospitals were assessed for Leapfrog s Spring Safety Grades. Among those hospitals, 27 have achieved 19 consecutive A grades in every biannual grading cycle since Leapfrog launched the safety grades in spring 2012. ....

Local obstetricians have been encouraging their pregnant patients to get COVID-19 vaccinations.
And they say patients have been asking whether they should get vaccinated and whether the vaccine is safe for them and their babies. 
Dr. Jeny Ghartey, maternal medical director and maternal fetal medicine specialist at Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin and assistant professor of women’s health at the University of Texas Dell Medical School, said a lot of her patients are initiating getting vaccinated on their own. For those who are asking about safety or are hesitant, she talks to them about the increased risks of getting COVID-19 for pregnant women. ....

Nurses in Texas are braving the extreme, unprecedented weather to make it to work, while hospitals across the state are being forced to work around serious water outages, with some even evacuating patients.
Brooke Wilson, a labor and delivery nurse at St. David s Women s Center of Texas in North Austin, told CBS affiliate KHOU she trekked to her job in the snow earlier this week, a journey that took about half an hour.
I didn t want to let them down. I didn t want people to be spread thin, she said. That s not safe for patients, it s not safe for us. It s much more emotionally draining if you have to take on a higher patient load just out of necessity because of the emergency situation that we re in. ....
