Palm Springs has weathered the pandemic, and the breaks are coming off
Despite Palm Springs’ tourist dependency, the desert city is emerging from the pandemic with all of its legendary gay resorts intact. All of the city’s gay bars have also survived, and the three gay bars and gay resort in neighboring Cathedral City have also managed to stay afloat despite California’s restrictive closures. Palm Springs has long been one of the gayest cities in the world, and LGBT visitor loyalty combined with the fact the city is within easy driving distance from Los Angeles has been enough of a lifeline to keep the city’s small LGBT businesses from going under. ....

LOS ANGELES Kristen Tate camps a lot. The freelance book editor from San Francisco takes car camping trips for two weeks every summer, during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and often on weekends. She knows it’s tricky to make reservations for campgrounds in California, especially when you’re looking for popular sites during the peak summer season.
“If I want something for a very desirable weekend, I plan ahead,” Tate said. “I either get that six-month window when (reservations) open, or I just don’t worry and wait for a two-week window right before. I start looking then because that’s when people start canceling.” ....

Desert X 'Indian Land' piece in Palm Springs already drawing buzz


People are already flocking to a Desert X installation that is being erected in North Palm Springs. The piece, titled Never Forget, sits at the base of Mount San Jacinto off Highway 111 near Tramview Road. It was created by Tlingit-Unangax̂ multi-disciplinary artist Nicholas Galanin, organizers said.
According to Galanin s website, the Alaska-based artist used the phrase  Indian Land™ in previous work about the history of colonization and displacement of Indigenous people.   The trademark is sort of ironic, Galanin said in a video. It s something we never would have done culturally. ....
