Charismatic African National Congress (ANC) veteran and businessman Mosima Gabriel “Tokyo” Sexwale was the talk of the nation over the last week after he appeared on television and claimed that he was privy to a Heritage Fund worth billions of rand that was stolen from. Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) were aware of the fund, according to Sexwale but the government quickly rubbished the claims, saying that the businessman had fallen victim to a “scam.” After Mboweni dismissed Sexwale’s claims, the ANC veteran was the butt of many jokes on social media, but he was not to be deterred. Sexwale announced that he would hold a press conference at 14:00 on Thursday, 22 April, after the government told him the onus to prove the existence of the fund. ....
Borchers’ contract extended a year Oakridger The Oak Ridge Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night to have Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers serve as superintendent for another year. School Board Chairman Keys Fillauer made the motion, and Vice Chairwoman Laura McLean and members Erin Webb and Ben Stephens all seconded at the same time. “I have found that the superintendent is always readily available to myself and to other board members,” Fillauer said at the meeting, adding he is “efficient” at providing information to the school board members. He gave as an example someone recently posting a photo on Facebook of firetrucks at Oak Ridge High School. Lauren Gray, city of Oak Ridge senior communications specialist, told The Oak Ridger that incident was a false alarm, involving steam from a dishwasher. She said the false alarm happened just before 6:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25. ....
Policy OK’d for ORHS block scheduling Oakridger The Oak Ridge Board of Education voted 4-1 Monday night to require more credits for students to graduate Oak Ridge High School, which is in keeping with Principal Garfield Adams plans to adopt block scheduling. Adams explained the reasoning behind his request to change the requirements in an email to The Oak Ridger. Under the current schedule, students can earn a maximum of 7.5 credits per school year. This adds up to 30 credits by the end of their high school career. “However, this is very rare,” Adams said, explaining that due to guided studies and junior and senior year full lunch periods, most students get 25 credits. ....
Oakridger Oak Ridge Schools Preschool is now Oak Ridge Schools Scarboro Preschool, and various areas inside will honor people in the history of the Scarboro Community and the city school system. “Scarboro, your legacy is being known,” Oak Ridge historian Rose Weaver said of the changes in an email. The Scarboro neighborhood was historically African-American. The community witnessed and participated in the integration of Oak Ridge Schools, the first such integration of government run schools in Tennessee, in 1955. The recommendations for naming came from a committee and was approved by the Oak Ridge Board of Education Monday with two separate votes one for the school name and one for the areas honoring people. ....
