Galesburg faces soggy season but still below record rain GALESBURG While rainfall is far from hitting records, Knox County and Galesburg have been having a soggy summer. As of July 10, Galesburg nearly reached its monthly average for rainfall of 3.67 inches, having received 3.31 inches of rain. This is still well below the record high for the month of 8.19 inches which was achieved in 2016, and well above the lowest precipitation total of 0.85 inches, which was reached in 2012. June was also wetter than usual, with Galesburg receiving 5.7 inches, again above the average of 4.89 inches. However, it is still below the maximum recorded, which was 13.24 inches in 2010. ....
A series of fast-moving storms, including a tornado, swept across Sangamon County Monday evening. National Weather Service spotters confirmed a tornado with damaging hail had been spotted over Pleasant Plains at 5:36 p.m., moving east toward the northern part of Springfield at 30 mph, providing golfball-sized hail (1.75 inches), rain and heavy winds. A tornado warning was put into effect for Sangamon County and the surrounding area for the next hour. The storm moved east at 35 mph over Sherman at 5:51 p.m., Mechanicsburg at 6:15 p.m. and Niantic at 6:35 p.m. The Dawson Fire Protection District reported downed power lines at 6:12 p.m. near Buffalo Hart Road north of the village. The department said that five utility poles had snapped off due to nickel-sized hail, high winds and heavy rains, knocking out power to homes and businesses serviced by Menard Electric north of Dawson. Power had yet to be restored as of Monday night. ....
PEORIA Severe weather, including a possible tornado, is forecast for the Peoria area Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. About 4 p.m., storms will move into central Illinois, with the north-south front extending from Galesburg to Jacksonville, according to Erin Roberson, a NWS meteorologist. The front will push in an east/southeast direction through Peoria, she said. The storms could bring hail with a diameter of a quarter or larger, amid winds of 60 to 70 m.p.h., Roberson said. The severe weather is expected to last 30 to 45 minutes. There is a chance for a brief tornado, she said. ....
