Mike Dunleavy declared a disaster in my home of Southeast Alaska. Record-obliterating rain more than a foot in a few days mixed with melting snow in the 50-degree F warmth and poured down swollen watersheds, tearing out bridges, washing out roads. Ketchikan Lakes Dam teetered on the brink of failure, nearly disgorging a flash flood through the city’s historic downtown. In Haines, the rains set loose landslides that buried homes and people. This extraordinary storm was born of the hottest November ever recorded on planet Earth. Warm air acts like a sponge, soaking up evaporation from the abnormally warm North Pacific below then wringing out on our communities when atmospheric rivers align. Record heat begets record wet. ....
