City of Tallahassee celebrating opening of FAMU Way

“The completion of the FAMU Way extension marks an important milestone for Tallahassee,” said City Manager Reese Goad in a statement announcing the ribbon cutting. “It is the culmination of a shared vision to construct an innovative infrastructure project that connects our community in more ways than one. We are proud of what we have accomplished working hand in hand with the community, including area neighbors and Florida A&M University, to create this east-west thoroughfare that is also a must-visit destination that will be enjoyed by residents and visitors now and into the future.”
The project was not without controversy though, as preservationist groups fought to preserve ancient oak trees and houses in the area that were a link to the past. ....

FAMU Way ribbon cutting scheduled for Friday in Tallahassee
The FAMU Way project has been more than a decade in the making. Tallahassee leaders will host a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday at 10 a.m. at Lake Bradford Road to officially open the road to traffic.
Residents are invited to attend the celebration, and masks are required. The event will also be streamed live on the City of Tallahassee Facebook page.
Community meetings began in 2010 to address the need for an additional east-west corridor that would enhance traffic flow. The project extended FAMU Way from Wahnish Way to Lake Bradford Road. It created three roundabouts, wide sidewalks, and a multi-use trail connecting to the St. Marks Trail. A community gathering place is now available at Lake Anita, along with a playground. ....

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â Southside Tallahassee will see another fire station in the area soon but it s not your normal station.
My mother s house burned and they lost virtually everything in the house, said Thomas Colbert a pastor in Tallahassee that lives right off of Lake Bradford Road.
Colbert said, If there d been a fire station closer I feel they would have known more about where and how to get to the house.
Colbert s story is one reason why the city is putting another fire station on the southside. ....
