ELY – “The real crusher was that Friday was so much fun,” said Adam Zins as he and his wife, Tanja, tried to untangle a wire shelving unit early Saturday morning from under a mangled tent. All around them, in the middle of Whiteside Park, was what remained of the Blueberry/Art Festival. “It looked like a war zone.”
A line of thunderstorms with damaging 70-mph winds driving torrential rains hit Ely at about 6:30 p.m. Friday night, just as the first leg of the three-day Blueberry/Art Festival was wrapping up.
The short but severe storm destroyed scores of arts vendors’ displays and tents, and uprooted big trees in the park, prompting Ely Chamber of Commerce officials late Friday to cancel the remainder of the 2021 festival.
A day after a storm ripped through the western Iron Range, Grand Rapids Mayor Dale Christy saw good coming from a bad situation.
âThe cool part here is with all the division there is in society, you see neighbor helping neighbor,â Christy said. âIt s a good thing.â
For the second time in three days, thunderstorms on Monday evening ripped across northeastern Minnesota.
In Grand Rapids, the destruction was âhorrible,â Julie Kennedy, Grand Rapids Public Utilities general manager said.
âWe had 5,000 outages out of 7,500 customers,â Kennedy said. âWe re annihilated. The town is unbelievable.â
Trees fell on power lines and on homes throughout the city, Kennedy said.
Crews were working to restore power across Northeastern Minnesota.

Severe storms moving through northern Minnesota caused multiple power outages Monday night, prompting crews to work to restore power.
About 17,000 people were affected by power outages around 10:25 p.m., according to the Minnesota Power and Lake Country Power electric outage maps. The outages stretched from the Brainerd and Nisswa area to Eveleth, Virginia and Fayal Township to Cohasset and Grand Rapids to the greater Duluth area.
