[email protected] LAKE PLACID The first-ever round of funding from the town of North Elba’s new Local Enhancement and Advancement Fund (LEAF) is going to 17 organizations hoping to either improve residents’ quality of life, protect the environment, preserve the town’s history or provide relief for small businesses impacted by the coronavirus pandemic. The North Elba Town Council approved a slate of funding recipients during its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 13. Altogether, $560,265 will be disbursed. The authorization comes more than two years after Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism CEO James McKenna first asked the Essex County Board of Supervisors to consider raising the county occupancy tax from 3 to 5% to fund town-level projects. Feb 20, 2021 LAKE PLACID Lake Placid Land Conservancy announced it has been awarded accredited status, a significant honor in land conservation. The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, granted this accredited after an intensive review of the Lake Placid Land Conservancy’s programs and activities, as well the policies it uses to conserve land. The accreditation seal represents its strong commitment to meeting national quality standards for permanently protecting important natural places in the Adirondacks. “We are incredibly grateful to receive this recognition,” says Lake Placid Land Conservancy’s Executive Director Kerry Crowningshield. “Accreditation ensures that our efforts to conserve land and water resources in and around Lake Placid are rooted in sound practices, and that our friends, neighbors and visitors will benefit from our efforts for generations to come.” ....

Dec 14, 2020 ALBANY On Friday the state Department of Environmental Conservation announced more than $2.2 million in Conservation Partnership Program grants for 50 nonprofit land trusts across the state, including seven in the North Country. A total of 69 grants come from New York’s Environmental Protection Fund, which is primarily funded by real estate transfer taxes. They will leverage an additional $2.6 million in private and local funding to support projects that protect water quality and farmland, boost public access for outdoor recreation, and conserve open space to benefit community health, tourism and economic development. The Land Trust Alliance administers the Conservation Partnership Program in coordination with DEC. ....
