Once upon a time in (near) Duluth: The kids partied, shot stuff in rural schoolhouses Early August, 1921: The News Tribune reported that young people were having unsanctioned parties at schools in Lake Nebagamon and Lake Amnicon. Written By: Christa Lawler | × (1921 News Tribune) Trending 100 years ago in Douglas County: Drunken brawls, liquor feuds and all-night drinking parties held after-hours in various school buildings unsanctioned, of course. “Notwithstanding denial of permission to hold dances in school buildings, it is alleged that young men and women wait until after midnight, then break into the buildings and continue dancing until early morning,” the News Tribune reported on Aug. 3, 1921.

Delroy R. Johnson Delroy Roger Johnson, 85, longtime resident of Lake Nebagamon, died peacefully, Tuesday, July 13, 2021, at Essentia Health-Miller Dwan Medical Center in Duluth, MN with his loving wife by his side. He was born at home in Hawthorne, WI, July 31, 1935, the son of David L. and Mabel (Lidberg) Johnson. A lifelong area resident, Delroy attended school in the Northwestern school district where he met the love of his life, Betty Ann Messany, on the school bus. He and Betty were united in marriage on February 5, 1955, at the former St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Superior and they celebrated sixty-six years of marriage before his passing.

Steven Ronald High Steven Ronald High, 64, of Lake Nebagamon WI passed away December 11th, 2020, after his struggle with cancer. Please join Steve’s family as we remember and celebrate him on July 24th at Mission Covenant Church, 5161 S County Road P, Poplar WI 54864. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with a service to follow at 11:00. Food and fellowship will immediately follow at Steve and Barb’s home, 8192 S Oakdale Road, Lake Nebagamon WI, 54849. Casual dress is encouraged.
