LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Strokes are the fourth leading cause of death in Louisiana.
In Southwest Louisiana, there are two certified Primary Stroke Centers, and quick access to health care for those patients is vital to prevent future issues or even fatal results.
”We’ll have patients come in from three-hour drives away sometimes,” said Christus Ochsner St. Patrick Emergency Medicine Physician Dr. Matthew Hanudel.

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - One local COVID-19 survivor was recently released after spending weeks in the hospital fighting for his life.
Don Simon spent 46 days at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital fighting the deadly virus, but Wednesday morning, he finally got to go home.
“Covid is real, it’s not a joke,” said Don Simon.
Simon’s family was overjoyed with emotions as he wheeled out of the hospital doors. They even rented out a limo for him to ride home in. ....

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - It’s the teacher’s turn now to roll up their sleeves for the COVID-19 vaccine. The COVID-19 vaccine will be available to Calcasieu Parish School Board employees this week, according to school board officials.
The school board is currently working with the following providers to administer the vaccine:

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Across the state, the winter weather has unfortunately led to widespread delays of the COVID-19 vaccine.
However, it hasnât caused a major impact in Southwest Louisiana. A number of local hospitals had already rescheduled vaccine appointments last week in anticipation of this weekâs ice storm.
Though, the weather has impacted some local outpatient providers like Walmart.
âWe want to try and get the people that are scheduled their vaccine on tomorrow [Friday], but we want to do it in a way thatâs safe and provides the correct environment for our patients,â CHRISTUS Ochsner SWLA Clinic Operations VP Lance Armentor. ....

The official release from Lake Charles Memorial Health System:
