By Donna Sachet– As we write this issue’s column, the San Francisco Bay Times joins the list of Legacy Businesses in San Francisco. Nominated by Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, the San Francisco Bay Times was determined by the Small Business Commission to meet qualifications of having “made a significant impact on the history or culture of their neighborhood.” According to the city website, “preserving our longstanding businesses is critical to maintaining that which makes San Francisco a special place.” So, kudos and congratulations to the Bay Times! The first ever virtual San Francisco Imperial Coronation on April 24 exceeded all expectations, protecting its 55 years of important traditions and pageantry, while opening the event up to a much larger audience. Candidates for Empress Ehra Amaya and Juanita MORE! and candidate for Emperor Mr. David Glamamore were out in force trying to capture the maximum votes with hordes of volunteers, colorful balloons, amplified music, and lots of old-fashioned one-on-one campaigning. As you may know from reading this column with regularity, Saturday was Voting Day for the next Emperor and Empress of San Francisco, and although one could vote in SOMA in front of The Powerhouse and in the Polk area in front of The Cinch, the great majority of votes are always placed in the Castro, right in front of ....

The contrast in the very same location between what happened on January 6 and January 20 couldn’t be clearer. Weeks ago, as fanatical followers of unproven conspiracy theories pushed barricades aside, then smashed windows and rammed doors open, rarely we have felt such a dark cloud over our country. Law enforcement professionals were quickly overwhelmed, people were injured, and five individuals lost their lives amid the senseless violence. As images of previous demonstrations filled our mind, nothing could compare to this maniacal violation of the hallowed halls of the United States Capitol building, threatening not just the constitutional business of our democracy, but also the very lives of elected officials, their staffs, and families.
