The University of Florida celebrated and discussed the historical, cultural and institutional impact of a protest that shaped the Black community on campus.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Black Thursday which happened on April 15, 1971 when 70 students marched into President Stephen C. O’Connell’s office with a list of demands, including having the university address the shortage of Black faculty and students at UF. 
“What I admired most about the students who protested 50 years ago was their courage of conviction.,” said David A. Canton, Ph.D., director of African American studies at UF. “Many of the students paid the ultimate sacrifice when they withdrew from UF. The students protesting at UF were part of an international movement for freedom and equality. ....

The Sunshine State Book Festival goes all-digital


Writers and readers will be able to come together virtually at the second annual Sunshine State Book Festival that kicks off Saturday as an all-digital event.
The Writers Alliance of Gainesville (WAG) didn’t want the pandemic to get in the way of its yearly literary event, hence its decision to get around COVID-19 with a digital twist.
“We wanted to have something to keep the momentum going because last year’s festival was so successful,” said WAG President Jess Elliott. “But it seemed unlikely we would be able to hold a meet-in-person event.” So WAG put members resourcefulness and imaginations to work digitally. ....

The U.S. Capitol insurrection was still on the minds of those at the Martin Luther King Day event on Monday at the Cleather Hathcock Sr. Community Center in Alachua.
State Rep. Yvonne Hinson, D-Gainesville, said President Donald Trump’s supporters reflected the ugly notion of white supremacy as they raided the Capitol. While praising activist Stacey Abrams’ movement that led to 800,000 new voters in Georgia, Hinson called on African Americans to fulfill King’s dream of equality for all by emancipating themselves through policy. ....
