Hospitals may not be adequately prepared for the next pandemic, study finds

Hospitals may not be adequately prepared for the next pandemic, study finds
As the COVID-19 pandemic wanes in the U.S., a new study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) finds that hospitals nationwide may not be adequately prepared for the next pandemic.
A 10-year analysis of hospitals preparedness for pandemics and other mass casualty events found only marginal improvements in a measurement to assess preparedness during the years leading up to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was published last month in the
Journal of Healthcare Management.
Our work links objective healthcare data to a hospital score that assesses the ability to save lives in a disaster. It attempts to fill a glaring gap in the national conversation on the need for improved assessments of and the opportunity for better hospital planning to assure readiness. ....

University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) Professor of Diagnostic Radiology & Nuclear Medicine, Linda Chang, MD, MS, received the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) 2021 Avant Garde Award (DP1) for HIV/AIDS and Substance Use Disorder Research a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director s Pioneer Award. This prestigious award supports researchers with exceptional creativity, who propose high-impact research with the potential to be transformative to the field. Her proposed project will involve a team of experts in brain imaging, infectious diseases, addiction, animal research, and gene-editing technology with the goal to essentially eradicate all traces of HIV from the body, and treat commonly co-existing substance use disorders. 2021 Avant Garde Awardees are expected to receive more than $5 million over five years. ....

Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have received a $5 million federal grant to pool genomic information from existing and new datasets – predominantly in African and African American populations in order to calculate the risk of developing specific diseases. They will use sophisticated modeling and genetic datasets to calculate the risk, known as a polygenic risk score, with an emphasis on studying people from different ancestries. ....

Study finds genetic cause of neurodevelopmental disorders

Study finds genetic cause of neurodevelopmental disorders

Washington [US], June 28 (ANI): A new gene that might be linked to certain intellectual disabilities and neurodevelopmental disorders was identified during a new study by researchers from the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM).
The findings were recently published in the American Journal of Human Genetics. Researchers of the study believe that finding genes involved in certain types of developmental disorders provides an important first step in determining the cause of these disorders and ultimately in developing potential therapies for treating them.
About 3 percent of the world s population has an intellectual disability. Up to half, the cases are due to genetics, however, because many thousands of genes contribute to brain development, it has been difficult to identify the specific cause for each patient. ....
