THE north suffered the worst of both worlds on economic and health fronts in 2020, a leading economist has suggested.
Ulster University’s Esmond Birnie said Northern Ireland probably experienced one of the most severe economic contractions in Europe, with GDP shrinking by 12 per cent.
He said the north is now very likely in the midst of a double dip recession. ....

THE north’s economy rebounded by 15.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2020, but economists have warned that it’s unlikely to herald the start of a sustained recovery, with further contractions expected in late 2020 and early 2021.
The Northern Ireland Composite Index (NICEI) is considered the closest measure we have to GDP. After a record decline of 13.7 per cent amid the coronavirus pandemic in the second quarter (Q2), it recoiled by 15.5 per cent in Q3 (July to September). ....

The NI Protocol governing trade between Great Britain and NI came into effect when the Brexit transition period ended at 11pm yesterday.
From GB’s point of view, the protocol solved the main sticking point in Brexit divorce talks, ensuring there would be no EU customs border checkpoints between the Republic and NI. Instead it placed them between NI and GB, casting a dark shadow over the Union in the view of most unionists. ....
