The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited on Monday rolled out an anti-vandalism campaign for the Southern Region. The official launch of the month-long campaign took place at Chirimba Primary School Ground in Blantyre where representatives of the police and the community leaders graced the occasion. In his speech marking the launch, ESCOM District Engineer (Limbe), Eston Macheche, said vandalism was affecting the corporation’s service delivery. He added: “We urge all of you to take a leading role in safeguarding the property of ESCOM by reporting to the authorities those found vandalising ESCOM property.” Protecting the property of ESCOM is our collective responsibility because if such property is vandalised, entire communities are affected,” he said. ....

“Investigations are still underway.” Balaka Magistrates Court has sentenced Dickson Chipoya to two years in jail for attempted theft of an Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited transformer stationed at Khwisa Trading Centre in the district on February 3 2021. Balaka Police spokesperson, Felix Misomali, said the court handed a 24 months sentence on Chipoya for malicious damage and 12 months for attempted theft last week. The sentences will run concurrently. Felix Misomali – pleased with outcome Chipoya hails originally from Chinamwali in Zomba. He said the court acquitted another suspect, who was answering similar charges, whereas the case for another one, Madalitso Gama, a faults operator for ESCOM, is pending at the same court. ....

Chiwaya: Several issues to sort out The Blantyre resident magistrates court wants to determine whether Chiwaya and Namandwa have a case to answer or not. The State has so far paraded one witness to prove their case before Senior Resident Magistrate Elijah Blackboard Dazilikwiza Sachalo Daniels. State lawyer Dzikondianthu Malunda has said the State has 11 other witnesses to parade. Chiwaya and Namandwa are answering charges of fraud and abuse of office between 2018 and 2020. ....

He said they arrested Gama, who hails from Mchiwa Village, T/A Mabuka in Mulanje District, on March 4 2021, while two more suspects are on the run. “We urge members of the community to always verify identities of ESCOM employees and their actual motives when they see them tampering with ESCOM property,” Misomali said. ....
