WATERTOWN â The staff of the Watertown Daily Times, the Malone Telegram and NNY Magazines have been honored by the New York Press Association for their excellent work in the associationâs 2020 Better Newspaper Contest. The association, which oversaw the judging of 2,440 entries from 151 newspapers across the state, awarded recognition at the organizationâs 2021 NYPA Virtual Spring Conference. The conference was streamed online for the second year in a row due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Videos were streamed live and posted to the associationâs website. The staff of Northern New York Newspapers earned 16 awards â three more than the year prior â including five in first place, two in second place, five in third place and four honorable mentions. There were a total of 437 awards given out during this yearâs virtual recognition ceremony. ....
CANTON â In response to Wednesdayâs riot at the U.S. Capitol, protesters across the north country took to the streets Thursday, calling for Rep. Elise M. Stefanikâs resignation â including her former Democratic challenger, Tedra L. Cobb. The protesters accused Rep. Stefanik, as well as other GOP lawmakers, of promoting sedition, or the incitement of rebellion against the authority of the government, when they challenged the results of the Nov. 3 election that saw President-elect Joseph R. Biden win the presidency. On Wednesday, during a joint session of the House and Senate where the Electoral College votes were officially counted, Rep. Stefanik planned to object to four statesâ Electoral College votes â Pennsylvania, Georgia, Wisconsin and Michigan â citing changes those states made to their election laws to account for the ongoing coronavirus pandemic as unconstitutional overreaches by those statesâ various officials and judges. ....
