Minister suggests with Bill C-10, regulations could apply to accounts with a large enough following

OTTAWA
While the government continues to insist that individuals online audio or video content won t be subject to federal regulations under Bill C-10, the Canadian Radio-television and telecommunications Commission (CRTC) could impose regulations on accounts that have a large enough following or are making enough money off of it, according to Heritage Minister Steven Guilbeault.
In an interview on CTV’s Question Period with Evan Solomon, the minister said that while the CRTC isn’t going to be regulating user-generated content, they may be able to have certain regulating powers related to discoverability of online content, if an account s channel has “millions of viewers,” are “generating a lot of money on social media,” and are “acting like broadcasters.” ....

Ambassador warns about impacts of potential Line 5 shutdown

OTTAWA
Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S., Kirsten Hillman, told CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Thursday that the potential shutdown of the Line 5 pipeline could see Quebec and Ontario reliant on truck and rail transport to get crude oil.
“It’s not even clear that we have the capacity in our two countries to transport this product in these other means,” she told Evan Solomon.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ordered the pipeline shut down next week, on May 12.
Enbridge says it will fight Whitmer’s directive.

Mayor of Wood Buffalo, Alta. says he has never been shown COVID-19 modelling

OTTAWA
Don Scott, mayor of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in Alberta, told CTV News Channel’s Power Play on Tuesday that he has never been shown COVID-19 modelling for his region.
“If they could get us the help we need, then I think we could start tackling this issue,” Scott told Evan Solomon.
The mayor says he has been speaking to different levels of government about the lack of data for over six months.
Alberta has the highest seven-day COVID-19 infection rate in North America.
