TAMPA, Fla. — Protecting student-athletes from detectable heart conditions that could cost them their lives. That is the goal of a new bill, Senate Bill 280, that aims to require heart screenings and first aid lessons at the middle and high school levels in the entire state of Florida.
I spoke with the founder of an organization that is one of this bill s biggest champions.
Evan Ernst is the executive director of Who We Play For, which he started after losing one of his high school teammates at the beginning of soccer practice. He was one of unfortunately hundreds of kids who died from a heart condition that is completely preventable if detected early through a screening. ....

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Brevard County nonprofit organization Who We Play For is doing its part one heart screening at a time, helping save lives like that of now 15-year-old Gavin Idone of Cocoa Beach.
Lena Idone described the moment last year when her teenage son, a health surfer, was diagnosed with a heart condition.
“It can lead to sudden cardiac arrest, we’ve learned. So, yeah, very scary,” Lena Idone said.

Research catches up to world's fastest-growing plant

LA JOLLA (February 1, 2021)
Wolffia, also known as duckweed, is the fastest-growing plant known, but the genetics underlying this strange little plant s success have long been a mystery to scientists. Now, thanks to advances in genome sequencing, researchers are learning what makes this plant unique and, in the process, discovering some fundamental principles of plant biology and growth.
A multi-investigator effort led by scientists from the Salk Institute is reporting new findings about the plant s genome that explain how it s able to grow so fast. The research, published in the February 2021 issue of
Genome Research, will help scientists to understand how plants make trade-offs between growth and other functions, such as putting down roots and defending themselves from pests. This research has implications for designing entirely new plants that are optimized for specific functions, such as increased carbon storage to help address climate ....
