Australia cancels two infra deals with China on national interest grounds

Australia has cancelled two Chinese Belt and Road infrastructure building initiative deals with a state government, provoking an angry response from Beijing.
The bilateral deals with Victoria state were among four vetoed under new laws that give the federal government power to overrule international agreements by lower-level administrations that violate the national interest, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said late Wednesday.
The Belt and Road deals struck with Beijing in 2018 and 2019 triggered the legislative response.
Victoria Education Department pacts signed with Syria in 1999 and Iran in 2004 were also cancelled.
I consider these four arrangements to be inconsistent with Australia s foreign policy or adverse to our foreign relations, Payne said. ....

Autonomix Carries on After Guitarist Zack Smith Died in a Fatal Shooting

When Denver psychedelic-funk band Autonomix played a gig last September 5, keyboardist Josh Nermon and bassist Danny Littler had no clue it would be the last time they’d share the stage with guitarist Zack Smith.
But five days later, Smith, 31, was fatally shot following a traffic collision in Denver. Nermon says the case is still being investigated. Smith’s death was a shocking event in an already difficult year, and to say Nermon and Littler were at a loss is an understatement.
Nermon met the guitarist in 2011, when Smith was a member of the electro-funk group Vine Street Vibes, and the two immediately hit it off. They d grown close over the years through their shared love of music, and losing his friend was devastating for Nermon. ....

President Joe Biden is making the strengthening of democracy abroad a top priority. The past 12 months have been a turbulent period for human rights, the rule of law, pluralism, and progressive movements. Around the world democracy is in retreat, with the leaders and populations of many countries weighing the purported efficiency and consistency of more authoritarian regimes against the confusion, policy reversals, and social discord recently on display in the U.S. ....

Not all equal
Correspondent Craig Clark (NZ Herald, January 18) has commented on how even though the US is a democracy, that it almost ended up with a dictator called Donald Trump.
However, he seems to be
assuming all democracies enjoy the same level of democracy. There are 75 democracies in the world, but only 22 of them are classified as full democracies and the US is not included as a full democracy. ....
