The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, and Muttahida Qaumi Movement have boycotted the Election Commission of Pakistan recount of votes cast during Karachi s NA-249 by-election on May 1. The election body approved on May 4 the request for vote recount filed by PML-N s Miftah Ismail, who contested the by-election. The Election Commission of Pakistan has approved a vote recount for Karachi’s NA-249 and said it will be done on May 6.
It will be done in the presence of the regional election commissioner Hyderabad.
The chief election commissioner had earlier reserved judgement on the plea filed by PML-N’s Miftah Ismail for a recount. He had contested the by-election on the National Assembly seat vacated by Senator Faisal Vawda. The by-election was held on May 1. ....

The final results of the by-election to NA-249 in Karachi were held back on Saturday, after the results were challenged by PML-N’s Miftah Ismail.
All candidates have been called May 4. Miftah Ismail wanted a recount in the entire constituency. He applied for a recount and the two-member ECP bench decided to grant it. The ECP said in a two-page note that since every candidate was complaining of how polling had taken place, that they could withhold the results, which had not been declared final anyway. ....

KARACHI: A tough contest is expected among candidates of major political parties contesting the by-election in a water-starved Karachi National Assembly constituency, NA-249, polling for which is going to be held on Thursday (tomorrow).
NA-249, Karachi West II, was created in 2018 by amalgamating areas that previously fell in two NA constituencies (NA-239 and NA-240) during three general elections held from 2002 to 2013.
Before the creation of this constituency, NA-240 was considered to be a stronghold of the then Altaf Hussain-led Muttahida Qaumi Movement as an overwhelming majority of Urdu-speaking voters lived there. In the delimitation for the 2018 election, areas from old NA-239 and NA-240, said to be dominated by people of other ethnic backgrounds, were merged to form the NA-249 constituency. ....
