Research: Stonehenge first stood in Wales

Professor Mike Parker Pearson (UCL Institute of Archaeology) discusses his research which has found a dismantled stone circle in west Wales which was moved to Salisbury Plain and rebuilt as Stonehenge.
According to Geoffrey of Monmouth, whose History of the Kings of Britain was written in 1136, the mysterious monoliths at Stonehenge were first spirited there by the wizard Merlin, whose army stole them from a mythical Irish stone circle called the Giants’ Dance.
Centuries before the development of rudimentary geology, Geoffrey’s exotic theory – that the stones at Stonehenge were filched from a foreign field – has enveloped the 5,000 year-old site in yet another layer of mystical intrigue. The downtown snowflakes are gone, and the Christmas displays in the Recreation Park are disappearing as New London begins a new year.
Unfortunately, the village unexpectedly lost a longtime business owner, Bob James, Jan. 1. As his obituary in last Tuesday’s T-G indicated, he owned Main Street Computers for many years and also served as the village zoning inspector. He will be missed greatly.
In better news, school is in session and the library is open. New shelving and furniture are being installed in the children’s department, so story times have been put on hold temporarily. ....

Lack of substitute teachers closes New London Local Schools

KEY ACTION Superintendent Brad Romano reported in-school classes ended Dec. 11.
DISCUSSION “It was a difficult decision based on lack of subs, and it is too early to tell about Jan. 4, Romano told the school board. We have to be sure the staff is healthy and able.” He anticipates making a decision near the end of the month and added the COVID-19 vaccine should be available for staff by the middle of January.

Library closed until Jan. 2 due to covid

Covid is touching everyone and everything in one way or another, and the library is not an exception. The doors closed Tuesday and will remain closed until Jan. 2, according to director Anne Lowery.
She said a staff member became ill and others were quarantined, so it was best for all concerned, including the public, to shut down for a couple of weeks. She asked anyone with materials to be returned to please hold them until January.
She and the staff wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy 2021.
Cub Scout Pack 217 is helping the Salvation Army collect goods for families. They are looking for toys and clothes, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and other items for families. ....
