Australian Greens The Victorian Greens have welcomed the state government’s cash for containers scheme and say it will help to significantly clean up our recycling and reduce stockpiling. The introduction of a 10c refund on bottles and cans is a direct result of Greens in Parliament, who drafted and introduced legislation for a scheme and also initiated the Parliamentary inquiry which recommended the policy. In 2019 more than 50 industry experts, environmental groups and councils unanimously supported a Victorian scheme through their submissions to the Greens-established waste and recycling inquiry. Deputy Leader of the Victorian Greens, Ellen Sandell, said the Greens were happy with the final design of the scheme and hoped to work with the government to ensure the scheme’s success. ....

Australian Greens The Victorian Greens have slammed a secret deal struck between the Victorian Labor Government and overseas-owned Energy Australia to keep Yallourn open for another seven years. According to reports this deal could include the government subsidising the coal-fired power station to stay open until 2028 even if power prices are so low they render the plant commercially unviable. During Question Time in Victorian Parliament today, Deputy Greens Leader Ellen Sandell MP asked the Minister why the government would use taxpayer funds to keep Australia’s dirtiest coal plant open for longer, in the midst of a climate emergency. 16 March 2021 The Victorian Andrews government is facing growing criticism for its refusal to disclose the details of a deal struck with energy giant EnergyAustralia around the closure of the Yallourn brown coal power station in the Latrobe Valley. Last week, EnergyAustralia announced that it would close the Yallourn power station in 2028, four years earlier than previously planned. Some analysts, however, were surprised that the ageing and struggling generator would last that long, but EnergyAustralia revealed it had struck a deal with the Victorian government that included some level of financial support.
