After storm damage, Blueberry/Art Festival goes virtual

After last week s storm damage, people are encouraged to shop with Ely Blueberry/Art Festival vendors virtually.
The Ely Chamber said festival attendance was strong throughout the day on July 23, but by 7 p.m., tents and art were everywhere in Whiteside Park. Strong storms had destroyed many of the booths, forcing the Chamber to cancel the rest of the weekend.
However, Chamber staff decided to keep it going virtually. There is now
an online site to shop arts and crafts. People can also make donations to vendors for tent, display, and merchandise losses. ....

Around 6 p.m. Friday evening, high winds snapped some trees and uprooted others which crashed down onto many tents and booths in Whiteside Park. There were no injuries reported.

ELY, Minn.- The 40th Blueberry Arts Festival in Ely was forced to cancel for the rest of the weekend Friday night, after severe thunderstorms with 60 to 70 mile per hour winds ripped through the town including the park where festivities were already set up.
“There wouldn’t have been a whole lot of show left for people to see if they did come up here to see it, because it seems like there was only one booth every 30 yards, something like that, that survived,” said Ryan Tischer, owner of Tischer Art Gallery whose booth remained unscathed, “it was pretty ugly.” ....

Storm devastates Blueberry/Art Festival

ELY â Fridayâs thunderstorm that ripped through the Blueberry/Art Festival and the resulting damage was a scene Ellen Cashman never imagined seeing at Elyâs Whiteside Park.
âIt looks like every tornado picture youâve ever seen,ââ festival coordinator Cashman told the Mesabi Tribune Saturday. With some of the parkâs big trees uprooted, it was âjust like the tornadoes that you see that roll through places. Itâs just awful.ââ
The cityâs signature summer event had just closed at 6 p.m. Friday before the storm came through, said Cashman, who is also the Ely Chamber of Commerce event director. ....
