New PCHD campaign promotes safety of vaccines for 12-15 age group

Local pediatricians are teaming up in a new Pike County Health Department campaign to promote the safety and effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, debunk common vaccine myths and encourage parents and guardians to vaccinate their 12-15 year-old children.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an emergency use authorization in early May to support the use of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine among children who are 12 years old and older, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) subsequently approved the usage of the vaccine on younger Americans.
All Kentuckians who are 12 years old and older can receive the two-dose Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, and all Kentuckians 16 years old and older can receive the two-dose Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, as well as the single-dose Johnson&Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. ....

Eastern Kentucky’s water problems are well documented, but for Pike County, some help may be on the way. The county’s two Appalachian Regional Commission applications for water system improvements and flood prevention infrastructure have officially been recommended for federal funding by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, who announced his support for the projects during a tour of the county on Monday.
A little more than $670,000 of the proposed funding would go toward Mountain Water, which serves most Pike County water customers outside of the towns of Pineville and Elkhorn City.. According to Mountain Water administrator Ron Sawyers, the funding matches other grants and loans sought by the utility for needed water main upgrades and an expansion of one water tank, serving a total of 300 customers and businesses.  ....

How Upskilling America Will Rebuild the Middle Class

Yves here. I hate to sound like a naysayer, but American needs more than community colleges to reverse the march of rising income inequality. We need much higher income taxes on top brackets, no or a very severely restricted capital gains tax break, and higher estate taxes, as well as stronger protections of worker rights. Even though “upskilling” sounds all well and good, the reality is that there aren’t all that many who will benefit from going to community college, much the less attain a middle class income from that level of education. The PMC “Let them eat training” has repeatedly been shown to be empty, particularly for older workers. And that’s before getting to a geographic mis-match: that workers too often wind up in declining areas, but lack the contacts and the walking-around money to get situated in a new location. ....
