Kristina Davies on the Power of Her "Deeply Rooted" Abstract Paintings


When Denver artist Kristina Davies set out to paint her massive work “Deeply Rooted,” she had just discovered Lizzo and her 2019 album,
Cuz I Love You. The painter, who had just retired from a career as a teacher, moved and danced to the record as she created her piece.
Her process, she says, is often fueled by music and driven by intuition. “Sometimes my eyes are closed. Sometimes I have both hands. So I m feeling it, and when I m doing that, I feel like I m very tapped into some more spiritual, meditative essence of our humanness. And it s timeless, and it s archaic, and it s ancestral.” ....

Christie’s New York is adding a twist to its sale of Abstract Expressionist art by pioneers such as Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Grace Hartigan today.
Winning bidders will have the option to claim the free, unique NFTs that were inspired by the artists, where they hung out during their lifetimes, and how collectors might display their work today. The Hartigan NFT, for example, shows one of the artist’s paintings hanging above patrons at the old New York art bar the Cedar Tavern. ....

Blockchain technology, when applied to art, actually helps the traditional art market, says gallerist and activist Amar Singh.

Amar Singh built a career, and his eponymous London art gallery, with one goal in mind: to uplift women and LGBTQ+ post-war and contemporary artists. 
After four years spent quietly investing in non-fungible tokens (NFTs), on Friday Singh partners with anonymous feminist art group Rewind Collective and Christie’s to auction off 11 original paintings by Helen Frankenthaler, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Yvonne Thomas and Lynne Mapp Drexler, among others. Each work will be sold with an NFT accompaniment by Rewind Collective. Bidding starts at $100 per work, though Singh expects each piece will fetch at least six-figures.  ....

.-Swann Galleries will hold its sale of Modern & Post-War Art on Thursday, May 20. The auction will present a selection of highlights ranging across Modernist illustration, American abstract artists—including members of the Irascibles and The Club—Color Field, Pop, Minimalism, American Surrealism and more.
The auction will be headlined by color field, pop and minimalism with 7 Maidens, a 1963 duco-and-oil on canvas painting by John Wesley ($80,000-120,000); Horizontal Brushstroke, a 2003 gouache-on-paper by Sol Lewitt; and a grouping of three portfolios Walasse Ting: Hot and Sour Soup, 1969 with hand lettered poems, acrylic and ink drawings and 19 color lithographs, Hot and Sour Soup, 1969 with 50 poems and 22 color lithographs, and Green Banana, 1971, with 10 poems and 10 color lithographs ($12,000-18,000).
