Two years ago, Lillian Cartwright teamed up with some fellow Harvard Business School students to launch a new spiked seltzer brand called Astrid. Despite all the tools that make launching a D2C brand easier than it’s ever been, the team ran into complications when it came to securing raw materials.
This piece of the supply chain is still stuck in the past, according to Cartwright, who explained that most of it is still based around trade shows, powered by referrals and personal connections and plenty of phone calls. ....

The news: Madrona Venture Labs, the startup studio associated with Madrona Venture Group, has raised $8 million for its fourth fund. The Seattle-based studio also unveiled a new model that turns its investors tech vets such as former Zillow Group CEO Spencer Rascoff; former Qualtrics exec Julie Larson-Green; former Axiom CEO Elena Donio; etc. into co-founders, board members, and advisors of its startup spinouts. ....

Seattle startup Common Room emerges from stealth mode with $52M in funding

The news: Common Room, a year-old startup based in Seattle, is coming out of stealth mode in a big way. The company revealed $52 million in total funding and big-name customers using its software that aims to help companies deepen relationships with their users and customers. GeekWire first uncovered the startup in September just as it was getting off the ground.
The product: The company’s tools act as a conduit between organizations and people in their communities. It integrates with communication apps such as Slack, Twitter, Discord, and more. The idea is to make “community” a competitive advantage, connecting users with each other and soliciting product feedback. ....
