New biosealant therapy may help treat damaged cartilage tissue

New biosealant therapy may help treat damaged cartilage tissue
A new biosealant therapy may help to stabilize injuries that cause cartilage to break down, paving the way for a future fix or - even better - begin working right away with new cells to enhance healing, according to a new animal-based study by researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Their research was published in
Advanced Healthcare Materials.
Our research shows that using our hyaluronic acid hydrogel system at least temporarily stops cartilage degeneration that commonly occurs after injury and causes pain in joints. In addition to pausing cartilage breakdown, we think that applying this therapy can present a surface that is sticky for cells, such as stem cells that are routinely injected into joints to counteract injury. This reinforcing hydrogel could actually synergize with those cells to create a long-term solution. ....

Sleeping for surgical success

One of the most important predictors of successful surgery outcomes concerns quality of sleep.
Colorado Advanced Orthopedics, Sports Medicine and Spine’s commitment to patient care before and after surgery includes ensuring that patients are evaluated and treated for sleep disorders prior to their scheduled surgeries. Patients with undetected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have a significantly increased risk of cardiac complications following non-cardiac surgery.
To address this problem, Colorado Advanced Orthopedics’ parent hospital, Pioneers Medical Center, recently began accepting patients into their new American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) accredited Sleep Center.
“I am very excited about Pioneers Medical Center’s new sleep lab,” says Dr. Kevin Borchard, Orthopedic Surgeon and Chief Surgical Officer. “As a joint replacement surgeon, it’s very important to know that my patients are going to be safe during and after surgery. Add ....

Hospital charges increasing more rapidly for hip fracture patients than surgeon reimbursements

Hospital charges increasing more rapidly for hip fracture patients than surgeon reimbursements
In recent years, hospital charges and Medicare payments for patients with hip fractures have increased much more rapidly than charges and payments for orthopaedic surgeons, reports a study in the
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma. The journal is published in the Lippincott portfolio by Wolters Kluwer.
The gap in Medicare reimbursements to hospitals compared to surgeons widened substantially in the last decade - even as patient outcomes improved and healthcare resource use decreased, according to a new analysis by Brian Werner, MD, and colleagues of UVA Health, Charlottesville, Va. The results confirm our hypothesis that hospital charges and payments contribute significantly more to the increasing cost of treating a hip fracture patient than surgeon charges and payments do, the researchers write. ....
