China’s Foreign Ministry and the director of the Wuhan National Biosafety Lab have denied the report, which has ignited further speculation about the origin of the covid-19 pandemic. The emergence of a novel coronavirus was first reported in Wuhan in December 2019. A World Health Organization investigation previously found that workers at the lab showed no evidence of having been infected with the virus and concluded that a laboratory origin was highly unlikely.
