GLSEN seeking its next executive director


GLSEN is the only education organization dedicated to creating safe & inclusive K-12 schools for all students regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
Following the March departure of Eliza Byard from her longtime role as executive director of GLSEN, the organization has opened a national search to find her replacement.

Tennessee transgender athlete bill echoes nationwide push


There is no evidence of transgender girls dominating girls’ sports, nor denying opportunities to their teammates, said Eliza Byard, executive director of GLSEN. In reality, transgender students still face discrimination, harassment and barriers to opportunities that their cisgender peers access, such as athletic scholarships.
Among more than 800 member schools of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association the largest organization of its kind in the state none has filed a complaint over transgender athletes participation in sports, said the association s general counsel Rick Colbert. It is unclear if any transgender student athletes are competing in Tennessee.
Coordinated push 
Despite opposition and potential legal challenges, the slew of bills is moving swiftly forward in various statehouses. In Mississippi and Utah, the legislation has cleared one legislative chamber.  ....

President Joe Biden issued an executive order Wednesday night that will extend existing federal nondiscrimination protections to LGBTQ people.
Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the country’s largest LGBTQ advocacy group, called it “the most substantive, wide-ranging executive order concerning sexual orientation and gender identity ever issued by a United States president.”
The order directs all federal agencies to implement the Supreme Court’s landmark 2020 decision in Bostock v. Clayton County, Georgia, which established that LGBTQ people are protected from employment discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. ....

WASHINGTON - On his first day in office, President Joe Biden issued a sweeping executive order making clear that gay and transgender people are protected against discrimination in the workplace, schools, health care, and other realms of American life.
The executive order outlines a broad interpretation of last year s landmark Supreme Court ruling that gay and transgender employees are covered by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination because of sex.
The Trump administration had interpreted that decision in Bostock v. Clayton County narrowly and only applying to employment. ....
