Keynote speakers for the 2021 Iowa Commercial Real Estate Expo include KC Conway, principal of Red Shoe Economics, Matt Higgins, co-founder and CEO of the private investment firm RSE Ventures, and Elizabeth Holland, CEO of Merle Hay Investors, owners of Merle Hay Mall. The expo will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Ron Pearson Center, 5820 Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Tickets are $125 through July 31; they will cost $150 beginning Aug. 1. The expo, first held in 1997, is presented by the Iowa Chapter of the Certified Commercial Investment Member Institute and Iowa Commercial Real Estate Association. To register for the event, click here. ....

Cleanup is expected to be completed by year’s end on a 43-acre toxic site located near a prominent entryway into downtown Des Moines, city officials said during a public meeting today.
In addition, the city of Des Moines will likely take possession of the former Dico site in about 30 days, officials said. ....

In February 2019, Mason City kicked off redeveloping a former J.C. Penney store into a multipurpose arena with a sheet of ice for hockey and ice skating. The new arena, located at Southbridge Mall, caught the attention of Elizabeth Holland, CEO of Merle Hay Investors, which owns Merle Hay Mall, located in Des Moines and Urbandale. We were very intrigued when Mason City reused their existing J.C. Twenty years ago, West Des Moines’ Valley West Mall was a regional magnet, attracting shoppers from throughout Iowa to its stores and nearby restaurants and hotels. 
The mall, with its mix of white and reddish-brown brick masonry, produced millions in property tax and sales tax dollars that governmental entities used for education, street improvements, parks and public safety.
Valley West’s luster, though, started fading after the splashy, more modern-looking Jordan Creek Town Center opened in 2004. Shoppers were drawn not only to the new mall but also to the dozens of other retail stores that popped up in nearby new strip centers, all pulling consumers away from Valley West. ....
