The City of Columbus has agreed to pay $10,000 to settle a federal civil lawsuit filed by Ellen Abdur-Rahim, a protester pepper-sprayed by a Columbus police officer during a 2017 political demonstration.
The ACLU of Ohio alleged in the lawsuit that Columbus police violated Abdur-Rahim’s constitutional rights when she was pepper-sprayed directly in the face by then-Officer Justin Masters while already hurt and leaving a peaceful demonstration on Jan. 30, 2017 near the intersection of South High and State streets. ....

The State of Ohio is set to become the 49th state to allow transgender people to change their gender on their official birth certificates.
The Ohio Department of Health has decided not to appeal a federal court ruling from December that ruled the state’s ban on gender changes in birth records is unconstitutional.
In December, Judge Michael Watson, a George W. Bush appointee, ruled that the Buckeye State must allow for “corrections” on birth certificates after a lawsuit was filed by three women and one man seeking to change their birth records. ....

The ACLU of Ohio, along with attorneys at Thompson Hine LLP and Lambda Legal, recently successfully challenged Ohio s policy forbidding transgender people from correcting their birth certificates to match their gender identity, convincing a judge that the state s policy was discriminatory.
Driver s licenses and other documents could reflect an individual s real identity, but around 2016, Ohio started refusing to allow people to correct what plaintiffs called the gender marker on their birth certificate, according to Elizabeth Bonham, an attorney with the ACLU of Ohio. Advocates thought there was no legitimate reasoning behind the policy and sued in 2018, challenging a state approach they said made life for transgender people more difficult. ....
