Meet the Three Women Who Changed the Face of War Reportage

Elizabeth Becker on the Groundbreaking Impact of Kate Webb, Catherine Leroy, and Frances FitzGerald
February 23, 2021
When I encountered her at the Hong Kong airport, a cigarette dangling from her free hand, I had never met anyone like Kate Webb. It was January 1973, and I was on the penultimate leg of my flight from Seattle to Cambodia to become a war correspondent. She was immediately recognizable from the news photographs: the thick-cropped brown hair, shy smile, and intense brown eyes. After I waved to her, she steered me through arrival formalities and into a dim sum restaurant with a view of the harbor. Our mutual friend, Sylvana Foa, had arranged for Webb to host me overnight and make sure I caught the morning flight to Phnom Penh. ....

BOOK REVIEW: 'You Don't Belong Here' - Washington Times

ANALYSIS/OPINION:
Vietnam was less quagmire and more a crucible for more than 468 women accredited reporters during a war where lives and deaths could never be measured by lines on a map. Elizabeth Becker’s new book, “You Don’t Belong Here: How Three Women Rewrote the Story of War,” offers insightful portraits of courageous women war correspondents who helped break down stereotypes.
During the divisive and transformative 1960s, both Presidents Kennedy and Johnson offered reporters, men and women alike, unrestricted access to the first war where casualties soldiers and the truth were broadcast on the evening news.
The war brought professional reporters to Vietnam, but for many women it was their first job. All of them were young and many found initial employment as freelancers (stringers). President Johnson’s support, along with the U.S. State Department’s “Maximum Candor” press briefings, created opportunities for female reporters and it’s where ....

How to Be a Better Traveler in 2021 and Beyond

Spend quality time with loved ones
Before COVID I d go out of my way to go on one big solo trip a year 10 days in the Republic of Georgia, a week in Paris so I could do whatever I wanted whenever I felt like it. After spending most of 2020 (and now 2021) alone, I can say that I look forward to traveling with my friends and family again and will have so much more patience to go along with the group. I realize now what a privilege it is to be in their physical presence.
Rather than focusing on experiencing new destinations, eating at new restaurants, or exploring museums I ve never been to, all I care about is spending quality time with my loved ones after a long year apart. A few of my group text chains already are plotting out which large Airbnbs we can rent once we re all vaccinated so we can spend some IRL face time together. My friends in New York are eyeing cabins in the Hudson River Valley, while another group might book this New Orleans converted firehouse th ....

Olympic eventer Will Coleman won his first hunter derby on Saturday, January 9, at the World Equestrian Center Ocala Winter Spectacular aboard Jill Grant’s Tropics, just two weeks after competing in his very first hunter class.
The 37-year-old, who represented the United States at the 2012 Olympics, won the prestigious $20,000 WEC Hunter Derby 3’6” – 3’9” at this new venue with a pair of scores reaching into the 90s.
“I’m very new at this,” he said. “My day job is eventing, and my second day job is show jumping. It’s pretty new for both Tropics and me, but he was great. He’s a good boy and he wants to please.” ....
