Where are the cicadas?
Clay no longer lives in Indiana, but has traveled back to Bloomington for a few weeks. He said he wouldn t miss this incredible phenomenon.
Larger numbers of cicadas have been reported further south in Louisville. And there are a few that are already emerging in Bloomington around the IU campus in recent days, Clay said. But he has only heard one or two lonely peeps of them calling, he added.
He thinks birds are likely picking off many of the new adults that are popping up, adding that the strategy of emerging en masse every 17 years is to overwhelm predators ability to eat them all. ....
