Thirteen years previously: It was 1990, maybe 1991, and I was 11 years old, and I was standing in the courtyard of the same high school, presumably. At the time, I was going to a free school with a few dozen students in the Portland area. The school started with good intentions, perhaps, but it would, in the course of the year that I went there, devolve into mere anarchy. Sometime toward the beginning, when we were all full of optimism, someone arranged a trip for us to participate in some type of science fair. It was held at a gigantic suburban high school, or at least it seemed like it was gigantic when I was 12. Brutalist architecture, although prettier than most, with a courtyard full of mezzanines. It felt like being on the Starship Enterprise, helped by so many people running around, doing important things. It was quite a contrast to our threadbare little experimental school.

January’s a slow month for music at the best of times – and these, most certainly are not those. In the UK, indulging in the self-deceiving ceremony of resolutions and better tomorrows, we hauled ourselves across the line into 2021 in front of Jools Holland’s Hootenanny, and straight into Lockdown Mk III, carrying with us a more fatal strain of the virus. For Brazil, meanwhile, the new year brought a rampant second wave, which has been likened to a medieval plague. In the face the current crisis, exacerbated by Jair Bolsonaro’s incompetent leadership (which has seen Brazil’s vaccination programme drastically fall behind those elsewhere), Brazil’s relative musical dearth this January is both expected and hardly something to bemoan. The Beaver Valley Choral Society invites all enthusiastic singers in the general public to sing along with BVCS members in virtual performances during February.
These “WinterSing!: Local Legends The Music of Pittsburgh Area Composers” sessions will stream on Zoom (Zoom.us) at 7 p.m. Feb. 1, 8, 15 and 22.
Striving for fun, while also developing musicianship and vocal technique, the performances will feature the music of folk musician Stephen Foster, jazz legend Errol Garner, Aliquippa graduate Henry Mancini and everyone’s favorite neighbor, Fred Rogers.
Rousing arrangements, done in four-part vocal harmony, will include “Camptown Races,” “Misty,” “Moon River” and choral highlights from Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
