A Love Story That Birthed an Iconic Gay Bar and a Lifetime of Activism

A guy walks into a bar and it changes his life, along with the lives of many other LGBTQ+ people.
That’s what happened to Art Johnston, who found his life partner and life’s calling because he went into a Chicago gay bar in 1973. The attractive bartender he met that night, José Pepe Peña, became the love of his life. Together they opened Sidetrack, one of the city’s longest-lived and most popular bars, and Johnston became one of Chicago’s leading activists for LGBTQ+ equality. ....

It was during the days of protest that RTRFM was formed (then as 6UVS), and it was the women s movement that helped inform the station s early days of programming.
From Burning Down the House to Drastic on Plastic, RTRFM has been the home of women who love to kick up a stink, and been a key launch pad for women broadcasters and artists.
We interviewed Drastic on Plastic co-founders Lorraine Clifford and Jane Armstrong in 2021, who shared their recollections on this incredible era. Listen below (and hear their full interview here).

Bunny Wailer, reggae luminary, dies in Jamaica aged 73


Marley died of cancer in 1981 and Peter Tosh was murdered in 1987.
Wailer, who was a childhood friend of Marley, won three Grammys over his career and in 2017 was awarded Jamaica s Order of Merit, one of the country s highest honours.
We remain grateful for the role Bunny Wailer played in the development and popularity of reggae music across the world,

We remember with great pride how Bunny, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh took reggae music to the four corners of the earth.
Marley and Tosh were The Wailers primary singers and songwriters but Wailer played a key role in providing harmonies and percussion to the trio s songs, ....
