(Patch graphic) ARLINGTON, MA Arlington voters headed to the polls Saturday to cast a ballot in the 2021 Town Election. There were contested races for Select Board, Board of Assessors, Housing Authority and Town Meeting. The polls closed at 8 p.m. Voters also had the option to cast a ballot by mail thanks to expanded rules that allowed any person taking precautions related to COVID-19 to qualify for absentee voting by reason of physical disability. Voters elected Eric Helmuth to a three-year term on the Select Board and re-elected John Hurd. Incumbent assessor Kevin Feeley and Housing Authority member Nicholas Mitropoulos also topped their respective races. ....

Eric Helmuth, John Hurd and Jennifer Susse are running for two spots on the Select Board. The town has made strides over the last year in encouraging diversity. What are some things you would like to see over the next year that could further those steps and bring greater diversity and inclusion to the community? Eric Helmuth: The recent and long-overdue national awakening to the realities of systemic racism and other inequity has spurred important, honest and sometimes difficult conversations in Arlington as we face the reality of this experience for many members of our community. We have made a good start together, but there is much more work to do. ....
