It came from veteran firefighter Russ Bornstein. He was startled awake when a bolt of lightning struck his home and started a fire in the attic. “Approximately 3:30 in the morning, there was a loud crack. I decided I better go outside and look and see what’s going on. As soon as I stepped out the door, I smelt smoke and saw fire,” said Bornstein. ....

The Charles City Fire Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 3:47am on Tuesday morning to 2198 Old Highway Road for a report of a lightning strike to a home. Firefighters arrived on scene to find smoke and flames visible from the roof. According to Fire Chief Eric Whipple, the home is owned by Russell Bornstein, who is a 20-year C.C.F.D veteran firefighter. The fire was mainly contained to the attic, with substantial smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home. ....

But when co-owner Tim Millis turns up the lights and does it Saturday, âlast callâ will mean much more than it has the previous 13,000-plus times it has been yelled, advising patrons they have 30 minutes to head out the door. On Saturday, it will be the final âlast callâ for the bar that is an institution in downtown Janesville. Millis and co-owner Dave Harrison will close the front door for the final time Saturday evening.
