Charles Clevenger, the first director of the Dixon University Center, dies at 79 Updated Apr 15, 2021; The death followed a six-year battle with brain cancer, his obituary said. Clevenger was a Brooklyn native who began his career as an editor and writer while earning his master’s and doctoral degrees through The State University of New York system. In 1984 he accepted the position of dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Shippensburg University and moved his family to Carlisle. In 1993, the center’s board of governors recognized the leadership and generosity of its founding chairman, F. Eugene Dixon Jr., by renaming it in his honor. Clevenger would become the Dixon University Center’s first director. ....
Harrisburg University Student Center lauded for its interior architecture Updated 9:27 PM; Facebook Share Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s Student Center was named Best Interior Architecture Project of 2020 by the Mid Atlantic Real Estate Journal. The MARE Journal, which covers the real estate industry in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C., recognized the Student Center in its recently published Best of 2020 issue. Located on the arcade level of the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, the 7,950-square-foot Student Center was designed by Harrisburg’s Murray Associates Architects, P.C., a press release said. “This award recognizes the innovative design of Murray Associates in creating a Student Center that is a unique, state-of-the-art space where our students work, have fun, and collaborate together,” said Dr. Eric Darr, Harrisburg University president. ....
Charles “Chip” Shearrow Charles “Chip” Shearrow jumped into action early on in the pandemic. A professor of advanced manufacturing at Harrisburg University, he wanted to help front-line workers in long-term care facilities protect themselves from COVID-19. Using 3-D printing technology at Harrisburg, Shearrow helped produce nearly 2,400 face shields free of charge for front-line workers. He passed away due to complications with COVID-19 on Jan. 12. “I’ve been there every day of the week including weekends and including holidays,” Shearrow told Fox43 in April. He was helped in the lab by his wife and his son. Together, printing, cutting and hole punching, they could produce about 12 medical-grade shields per day. “We’re just trying to take care of everybody.” ....
Harrisburg University sells $100 million in university revenue bonds to help construct its new 11-story tower Updated Jan 13, 2021; Harrisburg University of Science and Technology announced on Wednesday that it had sold $100 million in university revenue bonds. The money is being used for the construction of its new health science and advanced manufacturing educational facility at Third and Chestnut streets in Harrisburg. The bonds were issued through the Dauphin County General Authority and marketed and sold by RBC Capital markets. The school said that buyers of the new tax-exempt bonds are “global sophisticated investment firms”. “This sale demonstrates the confidence of smart institutional investors in Harrisburg University’s fiscal stability, and in the future of health care and advanced manufacturing as economic drivers in the central Pennsylvania region,” Eric Darr, president of Harrisburg University said in a press release. ....
