Taking covid vaccines, with their rare risks, is much safer than the frequent risks of actually getting covid, according to the Centers for Disease Control, this nation’s best source of information about contagious diseases. Yet we often hear people say, “My fear of the vaccines is much greater than my fear of covid.” This seems to come from those who have only been listening to their buddies, uninformed relatives and politicians. ....

In the movie “Horse Feathers,” Groucho Marx sings, “I don’t know what they have to say / It makes no difference anyway / Whatever it is, I’m against it / No matter what it is or who commenced it / I’m against it.” The GOP’s proposed amendments to the Pennsylvania Constitution are proof they have adopted in full this (Groucho) Marxist folly as their approach to handling the pandemic. As a county resident, I was proud and happy to vote by mail in 2020. Current voter suppression efforts in Pennsylvania foreshadow a similar threat to democracy and restriction of rights seen in Georgia last month. The Pennsylvania Senate committee on election integrity and reform is collecting evidence of fraud to justify future laws aimed at voter suppression. Yet there was no fraud in Westmoreland, turnout was high, and our votes were counted and verified. Commissioners Chew, Gina Cerilli and Sean Kertes worked together to certify the will of the voters. There were bumps in the road, but the county did just fine in the 2020 electi ....

It is tragic to see that one of the Western world’s heretofore great political parties, the Republican Party, has gone “all in for Trump,” including Pennsylvania’s Republicans. In doing so, it has made a profound moral choice, antithetical to its founding principles. The Republican Party was established on the principle of opposing slavery. It also stood against the political philosophy underlying slavery a political philosophy of minority rule, despotism and violence against those the minority deemed “unworthy” of the rights in the Declaration of Independence. ....
