Meanwhile, SaskPower crews have been cleared to enter the area to start restoring power to 8,000 homes north of P.A. that have been in the dark since Monday. “We will be able to make much more progress today with the cooler weather,” Steve Roberts, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency’s vice-president of operations, told reporters midday Wednesday. Roberts said the fire had expanded from around 3,700 hectares or 40 square kilometres reported Tuesday, but the growth was “not substantive.” ....
SASKATOON Cabin owners looking forward to campfires in the District of Lakeland will have to wait until conditions change. A municipal order banning campfires, fireworks and all burning permits was imposed Monday. Adminisrator Tammy Knuttila says sparks and embers from man-made fires could start grass or forest fires. “The snow melted earlier and it’s been drier than usual. We’ve been talking to our residents and consulting with them on the conditions out there,” said Knuttila. The district considered the provincial Fire Weather Index map, which rates the fire risk as high to extreme. “With the age of the forest, it s not if the forest is going to burn, it s when it s going to burn so we just can t take that risk the conditions this dry,” said Knuttila. ....
These towers are part of the final phase of the Wireless Saskatchewan initiative, which will see SaskTel invest over $70 million to construct 74 macro cell towers in rural parts of the province – see appendix for locations. Once the final phase of the program is complete, SaskTel’s wireless network will grow to include more than 1,000 cell towers, with over 700 located in rural parts of the province. Following a public hearing Monday, the District of Lakeland Council voted 5-1 in favour of the application, which paves the way for the business to set up shop in the space currently occupied by Bear Country Fudge next to Ambrose Grocery. The ice cream store will be relocated across the parking lot next to Nica’s. Co-owner Landyn Uhersky has expressed interest in being open in time for the May long weekend. Prior to council’s vote, a public hearing was held, and the district council received over 20 written and verbal submissions. Hildy Richardson was among the four people who spoke out in favour of the application. ....
