The University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center and its Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory have likely identified a novel rotavirus strain in very young foals that can’t be detected using current tests.
The university in Lexington, Kentucky, continues to investigate an outbreak of diarrhea in foals after local equine practitioners reported an unusual increase in diarrhea cases in foals between 2 to 5 days old. Foals can commonly develop diarrhea a week to 10 days after birth, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners.
Dr. Emma Adam, associate professor at UK and a research and industry liaison with the Gluck Center, said it became clear in mid-February that there was a pattern of cases that behaved like cases of infection with equine Rotavirus A, a common virus that causes foal diarrhea. However, the diagnostic tests were coming back negative. ....

Police dog Tygo credited for helping catch Benfleet robber

A police dog has been credited for helping to catch a woman who held a shopkeeper at knifepoint.
PD Tygo was called in to trace Justine Roberts after she had attempted to rob Benfleet Wine back in February.
Officers remained in their cars to allow the Tygo to track Roberts from the scene.
During the search, two items of clothing were found which were taken as evidence and helped police find Roberts.
It took detectives three days to confirm Roberts as the suspect and officers then arrested her from her home in Abbotswood, Benfleet.
She was subsequently charged with, and admitted, attempted robbery and threatening another with a knife. ....

Sesamoid Bones: They Take A Lot Of Pressure And Raise A Lot Of Questions For Researchers

As racing continues its quest to reduce injury rates, one key area of interest for many experts is the proximal sesamoid bones.
Most racing fans who have heard of sesamoid bones know about the two small, triangular bones held inside the suspensory ligament that form the back of the equine ankle, but horses (and humans) actually have other sets of sesamoids in the body. The two that form each ankle are called the proximal sesamoid bones. The human kneecap or patella is present in the horse as a component of the stifle and is also considered a type of sesamoid bone. The navicular bone in the internal structures of the hoof is also a type of sesamoid. Sesamoids exist because they reduce friction on joints by gliding over the joint s surface, helping to pull the limb back and forth. ....
