Today, 17 May, non-essential retail reopened across the Republic of Ireland, as part of the Irish government’s plan to gradually ease restrictions across a six-week period. A week earlier click-and-collect services, in addition to close-contact services such as hairdressers and beauticians, were permitted to resume. Fashion independents told Drapers that in-store footfall and sales exceeded predictions. “Reopening has been fabulous, said Kate O’Dwyer, owner of premium womenswear independent Emporium Kalu in Naas, County Kildare. Loads of people have been popping in, and are so excited to see and feel clothes again. Our casual clothing did really well during lockdown, but today we have found that people have been dying to buy dresses. Sometimes, when it comes to dresses, you just have to try them on.” ....
Irish indies optimistic ahead of reopening Independents in the Republic of Ireland are expecting a busy reopening period as appointment-only shopping opens from 10 May, ahead of full opening for non-essential retailers on 17 May.
Non-essential retail has been closed since 31 December in the Republic of Ireland and many retailers are availing of the appointment system which can run from Monday next week to get shoppers back into stores. Department stores Brown Thomas and Arnotts are running appointments from 10 May, and Penneys, the operational name of Primark in Ireland, has opened an online booking system and extended opening hours to accommodate as many shoppers as restrictions allow before general opening at its 36 Irish stores. ....
