Volkswagen is testing a production ID.4 1st Edition RWD’s durability by running one in the Norra Mexican 1000 off-road race.
Tanner Foust and Rhys Millen Racing modified the VW for off-road use.
The idea is to find out how well VW’s first production-based EV handles the off-road challenges.
A specially prepared Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV is running the National Off-Road Racing Association (NORRA) Mexican 1000 race April 25-29 on the Baja Peninsula. Rhys Millen Racing modified the ID.4 and Tanner Foust and off-road racer Emme Hall are doing the driving. VW says the SUV is running a stock powertrain and an 82-kWh battery pack with a modified off-road suspension and racing interior for the 1,100-mile competition. The company says it aims to show the capabilities and performance of an EV in an extreme environment. VW ....

Along with aiming to get the most miles possible out of its battery pack, that means the vehicle won t be setting any speed records on the 1,141-mile course, 893 miles of which are off-road.
A VW spokesman said the typical pace on the first day was 20-25 mph, but that the ID.4, which is being co-driven by Tanner Foust and Emme Hall, hit 95 mph on a flat lake bed. Its finishing time of five hours and 25 minutes over the 168-mile stage was about two and a half hours behind the leader.
The team s goal is to cover approximately 98% of each stage without the need to recharge and truck with a portable charger is being employed to top it off along the route. ....

This Butch VW ID.4 Will Compete In The NORRA Mexican 1000 Race Later This Month

Volkswagen has unveiled a hardcore ID.4, which will compete in the NORRA Mexican 1000 race later this month in the Baja peninsula.
While the model is the first production-based electric vehicle to enter the race, it has been extensively modified by Rhys Millen Racing.
In particular, the ID.4 1st Edition has been equipped with an off-road focused suspension that features “rally-style coil-over struts at all wheels and tubular lower control arms in the front and boxed lower rear links.” The model has also been lifted approximately 2 inches (51 mm), while its 19-inch alloy wheels have been replaced by 18-inch OZ Racing wheels wrapped in Yokohama Geolandar A/T tires. ....
