Four nights ago, the head of the Intensive Care Unit at University Hospital Limerick was named Limerick Person of the Year for 2020. But a virus called Covid means it is only now that the actual award presentation is taking place. Having just come off on-call duty, the mother-of-two who is the past president of the Intensive Care Society, is heading back home to County Galway with her new title. But this Cork native doesn’t do airs or graces - her day job is saving lives, after all. ....
Mid West Correspondent The intensive care consultant Dr Catherine Motherway, who heads up the ICU at University Hospital Limerick and who has been a vocal medical advocate during the Covid crisis, has been named Limerick Person of the Year. Dr Motherway, who painted a sobering picture of the difficulties ahead for Ireland at the start of the pandemic, said it was very emotional to receive the honour. She dedicated her award to her doctor and hospital colleagues and to all the patients they lost and saved, and in particular to two colleagues who died from the virus. She said she remembered them in particular and she hoped we could remember all those we lost and mark their passing properly in the future. ....
