For Filmmaking Pair Behind 'Liberty,' St. Louis Premiere Is A Long-Hoped-For Moment

Actress Natasha Coppola-Shalom stars in the new film Liberty.
When “Liberty” premieres at the St. Louis Filmmakers Showcase, it will mark the fruition of a dream nearly three decades in the making. Chris Lawing and his wife, Angie Clerc Lawing, met in film school 27 years ago, and they shared the hope of one day working on a creative project together.
Their short film tells the story of an intrepid reporter who uncovers corruption and intrigue at a local meatpacking plant in small-town Kansas.
“I m a grandson of farmers, and I went to school in a small town, so I do have a connection, and affinity, and also a fascination of small towns and certainly a love for Kansas,” Lawing said. “I really wanted to try and capture what it was like not the cartoonish element of it but [something] more realistic, so that the region, the town itself, is a character.” ....

Illinois lawmakers are considering a clean energy proposal that would force almost all coal-fired plants in the state to close by 2035.
This interview will be on “St. Louis on the Air” over the noon hour Wednesday. This story will be updated after the show. You can
Among the most contentious points of Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s latest clean energy proposal is a plan to phase out coal-burning plants by 2035.
That would include closing down Prairie State Generating Station, a massive coal plant in the state’s southwest corner. Hannah Meisel, a government and politics editor at NPR Illinois, ....

Tuesday: How Pickleball Took St. Louis By Storm

If you’re looking for a racket sport this spring, you might find some of the old standbys are a bit passe. Tennis? Too hard. Racquetball? No one wants an indoor sport during a pandemic. Well, how about pickleball? The main problem with this laidback version of tennis, ping pong and badminton may be that it’s just too popular. Courts across the region seem perpetually filled with players.
The very fact that the courts exist is largely the work of one man, as
St. Louis Magazine revealed in a recent story detailing the sport’s explosive growth here. Mike Chapin fell in love with pickleball in 2014, writes Nicholas Phillips. Thanks to Chapin’s advocacy, in 2016 Tilles Park became host to the area’s first permanent multi-court pickleball facility. At Chapin’s urging, four parks across the city have followed, with more on the way (and even more coming to St. Louis County). Later this month, Forest Park is set to host the USA Pickleball Association’s regional tourn ....

Friday: Wauneen Rucker Caps Pageant Journey With Mrs. Missouri Title

Originally published on April 2, 2021 4:30 pm
Last week marked the end of Wauneen Rucker’s nearly 40-year-long journey in pageants. Crowned Mrs. Missouri last September, Rucker represented the state in the Mrs. America Pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada last month.
And while she didn’t win, Rucker has plenty to be proud of. After starting in pageants at age 14, the 57-year-old St. Louisan became the second-ever Black Mrs. Missouri. She is also the first to win the title over age 50. She competed one last time in honor of a childhood friend who died last year.
The community cause she highlighted in this year’s competition was the St. Louis Area Diaper Bank, an organization she first learned about through her son. He was helping the diaper bank as part of the community service requirements for his high school curriculum. ....
