KU's virtual zine club encourages creativity for social justice | Chalkmagazine


Cutting up magazines for a collage, writing a diary entry, drawing a self-portrait, coming up with a haiku: This isn’t fifth grade. It’s the Emily Taylor Center’s virtual zine club, and it is much more than arts and crafts.
A zine, short for fanzine, is a radical medium that lives outside the confines of the publishing and journalism industry. Zines are self-made with self-published texts and images often stapled together and reproduced with copy machines. They have history in the punk and feminist movements, and often deal with social justice issues by being used to spread messages. Zines have a reputation as the medium of the unheard. You don’t need a degree or credentials to get your message out there through zines. They are often traded or sold for little money. ....

Educate & Act Series continues to build further dialogue around civic engagement

LAWRENCE The Educate & Act series, led by The Commons, the Center for Service Learning and the Emily Taylor Center for Women & Gender Equity, will host two events this spring in an effort to reach University of Kansas students, staff and faculty. The series will continue to feature opportunities to learn how to engage in democracy in the United States, offering information and resources about civic participation.
The series continues with “Part VI – Civic Participation for International Students and Scholars” at noon Tuesday, March 2. Through this presentation and discussion, KU staff and student panelists will share from their own experiences about opportunities and challenges, giving attendees a chance to consider how their unique perspectives can inform civic participation and processes. Tiffany Learned, International Support Services coordinator, will moderate the panel. ....

Collaborative series shines light on many voices addressing climate solutions

LAWRENCE – A University of Kansas spring program series will feature contributors to the 2020 book “All We Can Save: Truth, Courage, and Solutions for the Climate Crisis.” Each event will feature dialogue across study and practice and compel attendees to think about climate in both contemporary terms and historical context, recognizing that climate change disproportionately affects minority and low-income communities. 
The first event will feature artist Favianna Rodriguez in conversation with artist Imani Wadud, doctoral student in American studies, at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3. All events are free and open to the public. 
The series results from interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and centers, launched through The Commons. Events will invoke the essays, poems and personal narratives of All We Can Save, edited by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Katharine Wilkinson, to frame individual and collective agency around the urgency o ....
