More states are moving to extend Medicaid benefits to new mothers up to a full year after giving birth, far beyond the 60 days required by federal law.
That development, promoted by numerous medical groups as well as official state medical boards that focus on maternal health, reflects increasing alarm over the United States’ maternal mortality rate, which is the worst among developed nations and is trending in the wrong direction. Man charged in U.S. Capitol riots may have pushed barricade into police officer

Details have not been forthcoming on why a Kingston man was charged for crimes at the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol, but in an associated case, a suspect fitting his description is alleged to have assisted in pushing a metal barricade into a police officer.
Johnatakis, whose online profiles say he works in the construction industry, did not respond to emails on Wednesday from the Kitsap Sun. His lawyer declined to comment on the case. 
The charges Johnatakis faces are: obstruction of an official proceeding; assaulting, restraining or impeding certain officers; civil disorder; entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds; engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds; impeding passage through the capitol grounds or buildings; engaging in an act of physical violence in the capitol grounds or buildings. He has pleaded not guilty. ....

WASHINGTON (AP) Labor and delivery are thought of as the riskiest times for new mothers, but many women die in the weeks and months after giving birth. Now a provision in the COVID-19 relief bill could help change that.
The legislation gives states the option of extending Medicaid coverage to women with low to modest incomes for a full year after childbirth. States are currently required to provide 60 days of coverage, but medical experts point to research showing that women can die from pregnancy-related conditions up to a year after giving birth, and that 3 in 5 of all such deaths are preventable. ....
