I WOULD like to make a few points in relation to RG Clark’s letter (Many trad musicians are virtually unheard, January 22).
With regard to the points concerning Celtic Connections, I’ve been fortunate to attend every festival in various capacities from the first year. Throughout the years I have been supportive of the festival and have enjoyed hearing many roots musicians from around the world that otherwise I may not have seen or heard.
However, like many others in recent years I have noticed that the face of the festival has slightly changed, with artists appearing that you would normally associate with more mainstream festivals. ....

The White Heather Club may have sometimes been a little over the top, but it was well received in its day
HOW sad it was to learn that Richard Walker’s memories of programmes he watched while growing up such as The White Heather Club were embarrassing and negative (Celebrating our culture can beat Scottish cringe, January 21). Since my memories are the opposite I find it surprising, and I don’t recall any negative comment at the time.
I have heard some comments since from the “Scottish Cringe Brigade” but they’re still a minority in my experience and I have travelled life and the world with no regrets on the matter. ....

Celtic Connections opening concert offered a box of musical delights

EVERY January and into February, Glasgow’s extraordinary Celtic Connections festival offers audiences a head-spinning panoply of folk roots music from throughout Scotland and the world. This year, with Covid-19 continuing to wreak its terrible havoc, the doors of the concert halls remain closed and the festival is unable to extend its legendary warm welcome.
What it is able to do, however, is provide an impressive online programme, with new concerts being released every day until February 2. If Friday night’s Opening Celebration Concert is anything to go by, viewers can look forward to a brilliant, diverse and splendidly recorded box of musical delights. ....
