Up to 80% of news coverage in 2020 related to COVID-19, finds joint report

Over 2.5 million news items from 2020 were related to COVID-19  according to the new report ‘Covering COVID-19: How Australian media reported the coronavirus pandemic in 2020’.
The News and Media Research Centre at the University of Canberra partnered with media monitoring company Streem to analyse online, television, radio and print media between January and November 2020 to determine how news media reporting contributed to the construction of the COVID-19 crisis in the context of the societal forces and factors that shape news.
“The COVID-19 pandemic’s scope, severity and ubiquity gave news audiences an unquenchable thirst for news, while intense and relentless media reporting formed the backdrop to the public’s everyday experience of the pandemic,” said lead author, David Nolan. ....

New Zealand to spend $4230 a day keeping Christchurch gunman locked up
Keeping the Christchurch mosque attacker in prison will cost New Zealand taxpayers A$6.1 million over the next four years.
In the Budget released on Thursday, cash was allocated to Corrections for the management of people of extreme risk .
The unit has only one inmate under its direct management – the man who murdered 51 people at two mosques on March 15, 2019. It was set up on July 1, 2019 and funding secured until June 2021.

Christchurch mosque shooter seeks review of jail conditions, terrorist status
The man responsible for the Christchurch mosque attacks wants to challenge his strict jail conditions and terrorist status.
Australian white supremacist Brenton Tarrant wants the court to review decisions made by the Department of Corrections about his prison conditions, and his designation as a terrorist entity under New Zealand s Terrorism Suppression Act.
The judicial review will be heard at the High Court in Auckland tomorrow. He will be representing himself.
